Are You the Consummate Professional?
By Mary Pat Whaley, FACMPE
NOTE: Mary Pat Whaley will be one of our speakers at the 2004 NCMGM
Fall
Conference. Mary Pat will be presenting the "MGMA Washington Update"
in the morning of Friday, May 7th.
The word “professional” seems to be one that is widely used, and possibly
widely misused. It’s one of those words that everybody knows what it means,
but most people might have a hard time putting a definition to. (Kind of
like the word “ironic.”)
The American College of Medical College Executives uses the word
“professional” as part of the Body of Knowledge’s Performance Domain Eight –
Professional Responsibility. Other buzzwords in the domain include “ethics,
excellence, information overload and stress management, network, mentoring,
contributions and community service.”
What does professional mean to you? Do you consider yourself a
professional, and do you purport yourself professionally? How does one
become a professional? What do you do next once you believe you are a
professional? And how in the world does one become the consummate
professional?
These and other questions will be posed and addressed at the College
Breakfast on Friday, September 24, 2004 at 7:00 a.m. at the North Carolina
Medical Group Manager’s 2004 Fall Conference at the Grandover Resort in
Greensboro, North Carolina.
Please join me as ACMPE Nominees, Certified Members, Fellows and other
parties interested in Professional Responsibility gather to eat breakfast
and unravel this puzzling, yet fascinating domain!
